turbo help needed asap
Ok, i have been going on and on about a bad injector knock. I undid the valve covers for a third time. I unplugged injectors multiple times looking for either a bad injector or a cylinder or something. I put a riff raff diesel fuel return to un dead end the fuelk system, smoother but still have a ticking loud sound. Since I have owned this truck its never ran better.(not saying its perfect but running and driving well.) Except i have a knocking sound i can not pinpoint.
For the turbo, i removed it tonite in fustration(i thought an o ring was leaking anyway) I can wiggle the shaft at the impellers. Its not major but does go up and down. I have taken the turbo apart as far as the impellers on both ends to get a good feel. The play is up and down, I can almost make it knock with my hands pushing oppisite directions(up and down) on each side. Can a turbo knock? Its not squeeling from bad bearings. |

No but if it surges and you hear a squeal/grind its the impeller hitting the housing they almost never surge due to the wastegate. the play you need to look for is back and forth. once theres oil pressure on it the side to side tightens up( don't stick you hand in there to find out lol) check the housing for deep marks where it would hit i have a HX35 off a dodge i can show you what it looks like( crappy Cummins) hope this helps

Depends on how much play if you can post a vid that would be great. Now with the housing on can you press on it and see if it hits the housing while tring to move it. Also how many miles do you have?

125 miles. i did not get the loud bearing squeel or broken impellers from rubbing. But i ws able to wiggle the shaft a bit maybe 1/8 inch

Hey melmount, I have the same loud knock in or around my #8 cylinder. I believe you had another post about this a couple weeks ago maybe? I put a new injector in my #8 cylinder but did not make a difference. I am trying to get information from someone about my issue too but nobody seems to have anything to say about it. I have read it could be the piston is broke, the rings are broke, a push rod may be bent, or it could be a wrist pin, or the rod bearing is going out. The only thing is I dont want to open it up just yet and have to do an overhaul. I have great oil pressure and the compression and buzz test is good. So I'm like you, I dont know what to do and no comments is very frusterating. I wish the fella with the real nice gray ex-cab SB from Canada would chime in. He seems to be very honest and a reliable source. Maybe he will soon since I just called him out. I'm not going to start throwing $ at it yet as long as it's running good. Hope we get some help.....

i know i now have a turbo issue. i unplugged each inejctor a bunch or times gain last nite. i got fustrated so I pulled the turbo off. The rear impeller was slightly damaged. I dont know how to post pics here and computers fustrate me. Parts of the cast housing had crackes in it, i guess maybe heat shield? I bought a new turbo(ford brand new) It will be here in 2 days. i also just pulled off the exhaust manifolds and cleaned everything and installed gaskets there due to some pitting.
