some powerstroke questions
hello. i have a 99 f-350 ps. i was just curious:
what year did they start putting the 6.0L ps in the trucks? also, i know the 99-02 or 03 trannys arent the best, what year did they upgrade the tranny or was it when they started putting the 6.0L in them? thank you |

Hello 99,
From what I read up on, the 7.3 ended in 03, and 6.0 started in late 03 with a different transmission.. Judging from me research on Forums, the 6.0 is higher performance, but not having the longevity of the 7.3 which is more bulletproof. It seems that in hard going both can expect to sort of do an auto transmission at 200,000 - 300,000 miles depending on how hard they are worked and the kind of service they have as in regular oil changes... That is what I gather from reading a bunch of reports... Hope this helps.. |

i appreciate your response, for some reason i was thinking that the newer tranny with the 6.0 was built tougher than the 7.3L one. thank you.

Listen 99, you could be right... I do research by collecting peoples experiences and opinions on the subjects, because I cannot do all the testing myself... I am in the business of putting these kinds of vehicle to the most extreme tests in 4x4 and heavy towing off road... And I mean extremes, of climbing through floodchannels of riverbeds in the dry and not so dry seasons chasing pigs and jem stone or gold prospecting the roughest of terrains...
From what I can gather from many sources the 6.0 may be slightly more fragile, and its auto transmission slightly stronger.. But from collective reports it is not enough in either case to base buying a truck on. Personally, I like the 7.3 reports, and would rather have the stronger bones engine even if the transmission was a tad weaker... But that is just my two cents worth gathering research. Best Regards from Oz.. |

the torqueshift was available in mid year 03, as the standard trans on the 6.0 equipped trucks and as an option for the gassers. the trans is actually an allison designed trans, but ford cannot claim this as GM has the light duty truck rights to the name. it is a very durable and good tranny and we have seen very few problems with them, amazingly low problems actually.....Marc
