7.3 CPS
I have just purchased my first diesel, a 2000 4x4 extra cab shortie. I have been reading as much as I can here and one of the things I see cropping up is failure of the cam position sensor. Do they fail frequently and if so what are the telltale signs beyond the engine running poorly ? Thanks.

They can go at anytime and a cheap insurance is to keep an extra one in the glove box and there about $26

You may want to check your truck to see if it was one that had the CPS recall on it. There's a lot of debate on which CPS works best for replacement. Typically the general concensus is that the Black one is THE one to get.
Ford recall installed a replacement one into my 01 , it was the gray CPS which failed after 30k miles. I bought a Black one from Bob at Dieselorings.com.... it was 45 bucks, he has the only stock of black ones that I have found so far. RB |

7.3 CPS
Thanks for the information. The man I bought the truck from just gave me the same site to buy at. I will certainly order a spare to have handy.

Keep a spare handy. Telltale signs of one going out? Your truck will die randomly while running (usually at idle). Or it won't start. Takes 3 mins to replace.
Just to add some fuel to the CPS argument fire, I've had a grey CPS in my truck since it came out, and it's been great. No MPG changes, no issues.
