I have a 2001 F250 4x4 with 154,000 miles and lately I've noticed a diesel fuel (not exhaust) smell in the cab coming from my a/c. It usually occurs for about the first 10 seconds after I start the truck then seems to go away. I am now starting to notice the raw fuel smell when I get out of the truck as well, however I cannot see any leaking fuel and there is no fuel pooled under the truck. It is getting worse by the day... Any ideas would be appreciated!
Check to see if you have any fuel up top in the engine valley. Check it closely with a flashlight as it's hard to see even in the daytime.
Mine does it sometimes too right when I start it up and right now this time of year it's only when I cut the heat on first thing. It goes away whenever I get the truck in motion but I have a few small patches of fuel sitting on top of the engine.
If you have fuel there Couple of things to check for or at least a good place to start: Check either the HPOP OR 2nd thing: Check the fuel bowl valve o-ring to see if that stops the leak.
Mine isn't really bad but enough that I get the odor all the time but our trucks are not exactly air tight (good but not completely air tight) from the front of the engine compartment and any fuel in the engine compartment will give you what you're describing. Hope this helps
That is exactly what mine was doing prior to my fuel bowl rebuild. This new lower sulfer diesel is hard on the older o-rings and it wears them out. Dieselorings sells a fuel bowl rebuild kit for about $20 and there are step-by-step directions on how to do it yourself, it would be a good start IMO.
yup just had my friends get ripped off and spend $400 bucks for their 'mechanic' to replace the orings and a part on the hpop.. do it yourself trust me 9/10 times its the fuel bowl drain valve.
If you smell fuel in the cab, wait for your truck to be cool and open the radiator cap, i bet it smells like diesel. And the fuel you are smelling is running through your heater core. Flush the system and you might have bad injector orings.

The Fuel Smell I had in My ruck was as simple as it Needed the Fuel Filter Replaced and the Pressure was Forcing Fuel out of the top of the filter and it was puddling on top of the engine. It wasn't enough to make a puddle on the ground.
Replaced it, soaked up the Fuel and washed the top of the engine off with soapy water...Smell Gone.
theres only ever 4-8psi running thru the filter..and about 45-60psi running the in the head rails them selves.. to get it to boost enough to pop the cap..impressive lol
I checked the coolant a few days ago before posting on the forum and didn't smell any diesel at that time. I appreciate the other advise and I'll start checking things again tomorrow.
So for those of us not handy do it yourselfers (Hey I'm a 50 yo mom and drive a STICK diesel dually - that's enough!) I'll get fuel filter changed, but guess have to take to dealer to check the O rings etc? (sounds like lots of $$) Very small diesel on ground after parked for 2 days (teaspoon). Other leaks?
