Worst looking air filter ever

Helped a buddy look at a truck a few weeks ago, he ended up buying it... 2000 F250, ext cab, long bed, 4x4, 7.3PSD, auto, kinda rusty, and with about 250K miles on it. Was about 15 degrees out when we went to look at it, started great with out being plugged in, and we test drove it. Checked for blow by, none noticeable... Ran great, shifted good, and the seller was stuck on $5000. My buddy offered $4800, and we walked away... called back 2 days later and took the offer.

So a week goes by, the truck is now in my buddy's driveway, he starts going over it, as we all would... calls me when he checks the air filter, something we had not done when we went to look at it... thinking back, I wonder how we missed it.

Needless to say, the used 6637 filter I had given him was MUCH cleaner, and now he has a DIY intake... he is thinking of boxing up and mailing the filter back to the previous owner... to ask WHAT THE HE!! was he thinking??? That filter looks like it has been in the truck since it left the factory...

When installing the DIY, I did check the compressor wheel, the leading edges are slightly ragged, not REALLY bad, but noticeable. Will see if I can talk him into a WW... but not sure if a tight azz that had me put a used 6637 filter on his 250K mile truck wants to spend the $100 for a WW... (If it ain' broke... he would say)

Wishing we would have seen it before he made an offer... it would have been alot lower had the filter been known... but that's our fault. It was cold. It was snowy. I never even looked under the truck much... but for the price, you can't complain... but it might have knocked another few hundred bucks off...

Was there any pass thru on the top side of the filter box? I've got a buddy of mine that had a bunch of pass thru on one he was lookin at... maybe if he goes low enough on the price I'll have him pick it up...

That's some good preventative maintenance there, lol!

Minders are useless. Just pop it open and look, it isn't that hard.

If your oil is still golden at 3k you might wanna try a different oil.
