temp door. qick connect heater core

i was changing my heater core today and when i took off the temp motor i broke the door. it would have been nice if the chilton book would have said put temp into cold position before trying to turn motor to remove. has anyone else ran into this problem and how did u fix it.

as anyone deleted quick connects on heater core hoses? they are a pain in the ***.
