grey cps and phantom codes(injector)

I ran a contribution test on my wifes 99. I got cylinder 8 fault. She has a grey recall cps in her truck. I put a black one in it and no more fault from number 8.
I read a while back how it can cause cyl 3 combined with 8 fault. But usually did them both together. Black cps no code.??
