Fuel Tank Swap?

I have searched this one, but cant seem to find an answer.

I have an extended cab short bed truck but it has the small 26 gal tank on it. I need to drop the tank at some point to check the pickup hose for the pump and will do the harpoon mod while I have the chance, but I am wanting to know if there is any way to replace it with a bigger tank. It would be nice to have the capacity on long trips. Is there any tanks out there I could pick off of a wrecked truck and put it in place? It would be nice to have a 40 gal tank.

transfer flow makes a 46 gallon replacement but its about $900. hopefully someone will chime in on making the longbox 38 gallon fit into the SB trucks.

Always thought the shortbeds had 29 or 30 gallon tanks? I dropped my tank on Sunday to do the harpoon mod. Gauge was around 1/8, siphoned out around 6 gallons before putting the tank back in (There was still some diesel sloshing around that I didn't get siphoned). Once it was back in, & the siphoned diesel poured back in, a short trip to the gas station to fill it and it held 27.7 gallons.

Both the fill tube & vent tube stick at least 4" down into the tank, cutting the vent tube almost flush with the tank gets rid of the foaming issue when you fill your tank, allowing for an additional 3 to 5 gallons of diesel.

lots of really good information. Thank you! I like the idea of the 47 gal tank a lot but $900 + is a lot for right now. If nothing else pops up, I might just have to stick to the harpoon mod. I have time though. Not planning on doing this tomorrow or any time extremely soon.

just get an aux tank from northern tool it goes under the tool box
