Fuel tank pick-up missing?? '02 7.3

So my truck stalls on me the other day, won't start back up, so I have it towed to my "diesel guy". He checks all the normal F-250 not starting problems and figures out my tank was empty. Put 5 gallons in and she fired right up. Now I know for a fact, I had an 1/8 tank left (my gauge said so and I know how many miles I get out of a tank). Anyhow I filled her up and of I went, a week and a half later.....1/8 tank she stalls and won't start, put in 5 gallons and .....yep she starts right up. Is there some kind of pick-up extension thats missing or fallen off or........??? Is there a DIY fix for this? Thx Kelly

Here's the instructions for the "Hutch Mod" which show the fuel pickup assembly. It might give you some ideas of what broke and how to fix it...
