Front axle work
Hi all. Can anyone point me towards a place to order a knuckle off of the internet? Also, how do you know if you have to replace your entire bearing hub assembly?
I had a medium grinding sound coming from my passenger side while traveling at over 10mpg. Every once in a while, when the surface of the road changed (like a bridge) I would hear a banging sound. I decided to take a look and replace the ball joints, U-joints and grease the needle bearings at the same time. There was a lot of play some where, but it didn't appear to be coming from the ball joints. I was able to grab the axle spindle and move it all around. The needle bearing is definitely shot. There are pieces of it missing. (Ack! where are they now?!) I found a bent, battered, and corroded knuckle seal (FORD F81Z-3254-CB). There were also deep gashes in the knuckle where the seal sits. It appears that the metal ring in the seal made the gashes. Thanks in advance! Jenn 2001 F350 7.3L 4x4 Dually |

id replace everything. on my d60 i could jack it up and the tire would move like crazy.. I just replaced spindles and all inner and outer bearings and all is good.
spindles were bent on one side thats why i did them. i bought a complete rebuild kit minus the spindles for less than a hundred i think. |

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me. I would replace the wheel bearing and knuckle seals (check the inner dust/axle seal while you're in there). Also check your sway bar bushings as they can cause a sort of banging or knocking noise as well.
