Do I have a limited slip differential?
Are there any vin codes or tags that would tell me if I have a limited slip differential? I could just go out and pour the coals to her but she has some miles and don't want to tear anything up. She's a late 99 f250 7.3 2WD
Thanks Cory |

Yea there is a tag on the right side of the diff. On the first line there are some numbers . mine says , 4.10 F81A AUG . On the second line are some other numbers and finally 2 letters ....... LS . This means it is a limited slip .
That being said mine is a Dana 80 , yours is probably a Sterling with a 10.5 ring gear . Last edited by Bad Night; 09-22-2010 at 05:07 PM. Reason: forgot to put the gear size |

on the tag on the rear end , it give gear ratio like 3.73 if you have a limited slip, it says 3 L 73

Easier way... Check the white tag on the driver's door jam. It'll probably say C1, which is 3.73 LS, although I just ran out to the garage to double check my truck, and it doesn't list anything on that sticker.
![]() It might have it on the axle tag, but sometimes whoever serviced the diff last doesn't put the tags back on. |

Everyone is right. Door jamb says c1 and tag says 3 L 73. I guess it's safe to say I have a 3.73 limited slip
thanks everyone

Does it work to jack up both back wheels and spin one by hand, if the other wheel turns the other way=open diff, if they both spin the same way=limited slip?
