Looking to Buy PSD want opinions

I'm a newbie to not only the forums but to diesels. Right now I'm looking at a2000 F250 Crew Cab 4x4 7.3L with 100,000. They guy is asking 17000.
It's a Lariat package. The only thing he pointed out was that it smokes a little at first start up for about 5 mins and was told that it could possibly be an injector. I asked him how much driving on the highway and longer trips he does, and he said that he uses it more for everyday and not alot of long trips.
I would think that it is possible that the truck just needs to be ran out on the highway for a little while to let the truck clean out itself.....So does this sound like a good deal to all the experts or should I keep looking. Also on the same note, If I do buy the truck I'm looking at installing a programmer or chip to increase mpg, any suggestions on what's the best bang for the buck.

to the ORG. Great to have ya. I would have him get it checked out first. That way you know for sure. Other than that, if an Oasis checks out, and the body looks straight, that is not a bad price. I would maybe start at 15.5 just to see what he will do, and go from there.

Once you get one, in this order, gauges, intake, exhaust, then a flip chip like TS or DP or something. That is the best way to do it IMO. Once again, great to have ya.

Thanks for the replies....I forgot to say about the scan, he told me he had one done at autzone and nothing came up. I was thinking the same thing Logan, I was gonna start at 15,500 and see what happens. Now for the Oasis thing, is that the same as CarFax, I bought a month subscription to CarFax and the truck comes up clean and I would be he third owner. Oh yeah, I'm out in West Texas

The ones at auto zone will not read codes for the diesel... Find someone with auto enginuity and run a buzz test, cyl cont test...

That sounds like a terrible deal, I would stay away from it, by the way did you hapen to get the guys phone #? LOL!!

I wouldn't be surprised if it needed glow plugs, and possibly injector o-rings, both easy jobs to do, and could possibly clear up some of the early start up smoke. Good luck Let us know what happens.
