fuel sender problems
i bought a new fuel tank strainer recently and finally got time to pull the tank to replace it. i was surprised to find that the strainer was not broken off..... so what gives, i was told by the previous owner that he ran out of fuel at a 1/4 tank. i was close to a 1/4 tank and went down a hill and the truck stumbled and almost dies but cleared up when i came to a flat spot in the road, so i know it will run out of fuel. other than the sender being faulty is there anything else i can look for? is there a way to test the sender?

I had the same problem a few months ago. I used some Diesel Kleen at the recommended heavy cleaning dosage and my gauge/sending unit began working again with no problems since. Seems wax get built up over time and makes them sticky. Other than that, you can test the resistance of the sending unit by using an ohm meter and checking the resistance just like a gasoline type vehicle. I would suggest calling the dealer service dept. to get the proper resistance readings.
I used Diesel Kleen because of it's availability around here. |

My gauge didn't act funny either. Just when it got to 1/4 tank, it stayed there not dropping any further. I noticed it when I filled up. 38 gal. tank and would take 35 gallons in it. Just a thought.
