Forged or not?
How do you know if your rods are forged? Anything in the VIN? by year or MFG date? I hear some say 2000's are forged, but wouldn't it be by production date? Anyone know the production date?
Thanks |

From my understanding early 99's and older, So if you have 99.5 or newer most likely you do not have the forged rods.

I had my 7.3L rebuilt and we put in a set of Forged Rods to replace the OEM PMR's (powder metal rods) The rods we bought were Forged and I got em from
Diesel Innovations They are 7.3L OEM forged rods But i believe that they came from the older 7.3L , I think 98' or under ?? Check with the guys at the above site they will know 4 sure. The forged OEM 7.3L Rods are also bein' manu'ed by Crower but I think they go for 2k Good Luck, If I am wrong the guys who are techs on this site will correct me , but the guy's at diesel innovations will know also....

Mine are forged. Most say engine production before 10/99 will have them. Here is how to tell. 7.3 Inspection Hole for Powdered Metal Rod Determination

Why the interest in the different rods? Is one or the other a known defect?

the forged rods are stronger then the powder metal rods. There for if you are going to build alot of hp out of your engine you best get forged rods.
