Engine to trans alignment dowels

I'm in the process of installing a Tidewater long block, the ones in the old block seem impossible to remove.

Do you just go get new ones or is there a trick to getting them out?

I haven't taken them out myself. I imagine they are pressed in there. It may be easier to get new ones then try to extract them.
