Cylinder contribution test

Just a quick easy question...when you do a contribution test, shouldn't the truck drop each cylinder while it is being performed? Seems like the first time I had one done it did. (Can't remember for sure though. I was just learning then) I did one the other day and it didn't return any codes, but it just sounded like it sat there and idled. Nothing special.
