muff or no muff

i was wanting to know what gives you better mpg when it comes to exhaust. i currently have 4" straight pipes but talking to some freinds they said there mpg went down when they took off there muffler. is that a coincidense or is there some truth to it

less restriction=better breathing truck=theoretically better mpg.

ON a diesel it won't matter, might help, on a gas it could hurt mpg's.
