need some info on torque converter seleniod

I am going back to thinking my tc is bad. Before i change it can someone tell me what the selenoid for it, does? I know the tc is hydraulic operated but its electrically controlled. Mine seems to shake mid 3rd gear and 4th especially if I allow the tc to lock up. I spliced into the wire so i can deactivate it.
Before i rip out the tc, I would like to know what the selenoid does? what happens if it fails? I want to make sure its not what I should be changing
thx

I did some reading, I need to know if a selonoid is bad, can it cause the tc to vibrate in the same manner as if the tc clutch is bad. I spliced into my tc ground wire from the computer and hooked up a switch. I cant lock the converter but if i flip the switch it keeps the pcm from grounding the tc and allowing it to electrically lock. I am wondering if a bad selonoid is causing me to blame the tc??
