newbie with check engine light/no start

I'm new here, just bought an 01 f650 with powerstroke. Check engine light has been coming on occasionally, always goes off after a minute or three. Then I went to start today and it started and ran for a second or two, then died. Not a slow die, just shut down. Any ideas? Hopefully the two symptoms are related. whenever I'd check for codes at autozone there was none stored, though I could never catch it with the SES light on.

Autozone scanners can't read codes on our trucks, you need to get a good scanner on it. Such as a Snap-on or Autoengunity...

You should have some codes stored, post em up

took it to ford, they deduce that it has the ecm from a different pickup, most likely a 250/350. It had thrown numerous codes, most of which could not pertain to my truck, such as 4r100 tranny sensor problems (mine has an allison), etc. The only possible codes that could be a problem were a hpop code and cylinder 5's injector failed the injector test. They couldn't even find a ecm from ford or any other stealership. not sure what to do next.

yah, the 650 is a conversion type truck... Run an oasis, or get a build sheet to find out what it left the factory with
