Carter vs. Bosch Fuel Pump Exchange

So I have a question for those who have replaced the frame mounted fuel pump on a 1999 F250 7.3 PSD or any 7.3 PSD since I believe they are all the same. I have a failed (after 134K miles) OEM Bosch pump, number 0580464074 with the Ford number F81U9350AA stamped on it. I ordered a Carter P74221 from Rockauto.com to replace it. They offered good service and a good price.

I am under the truck last night, diesel dripping on my face, and the fuel line fitting (small screw type) on the exit side of the pump does not engage into the pump. Turns out the screw fitting (I assume it is original Ford) is too big for the Carter pump. Has anyone had this happen to them on the Carter vs. Bosch replacement?

I am in search of an adapter fitting to match both thread and diameter patterns to make the Carter work. Has anyone done this, and what did you use for the adapter fitting? Did you even need an adapter? Or did you replace the fuel line fitting to make it work with the pump?

So many questions, so little time!! I appreciate your feedback and insight into this issue.
