Front end growling?

Hello out there, I have a 99 f250 psd, when driven it makes a horrible growl somewhere up front that you can feel in the wheel and on the floor,i switched dash munt to 4wd hi and the noise went away, shifted back to 2 wd and the noise came back shortly.got out and locked the hubs manually and the noise is gone in 2 wd . bad hubs? bad bearings? bad front axle? i have 125k miles and have replaced front bearings at 60 k miles but it did not make this racket thanks Dennis

I would guess bad bearing in the hub that the axle shaft rides on. When the hub is locked in the axle is spinning with the hub....unlocked the hub is turning and the axle shaft is not (or at least not supposed to be). Should be relatively easy to fix.
