Unknown item on intake??

ok..gotta stupid question. On the intake of this E550 beastie of mine, there is a black plastic "box" tied in between the air intake housing and the turbo inlet. From what I can tell, it seems to serve absolutely no purpose whatsoever. Theres no sensor or anything plugged into it..it just kinda sits there. Anyone have any idea just what this is and do I really need it? I'd ask the dealer but he'd just say it was bad and I need to replace it..lol.
