Strong exhaust smell

This is my first diesel. My exhaust is clear, no black or white smoke upon start-up, acceleration, etc. My only concern is that the exhaust smell is very strong. It doesn't smell like diesel or anything burning, rather just very strong, and only out of the muffler, not towards the engine, etc.

Is this typical or would you have any recommendations. I get between 12-18mpg which seems to be about normal, no fuel leaks, oil level doesn't drop, etc.

Mine has a strong smell too, maybe just comes with age.
