Thinking about buying 99 diesel... What to check?

Ok so first off i will admit i don't know anything about diesels. i went and looked at a 99 f250 diesel tonight that seemed to run great and rode smoothe. He says it has a 6 inch exhaust and tune, but all he showed me was a little dial and said that controlled idle, boost and had settings for towing and fuel economy and performance. Is this possible or is this just a simple boost controller?

Also what should i look for wrong with this truck. It has 180,000 miles it is a 99 f-250 7.3l 4x4 extended cab truck

hows the transmission feel? ask him if hes got proof of doing any oil changes etc.. whens the last time he changed the fuel filter. chances are if its got a chip already it could be alittle beat but it depends on the guy really.
