So, I am looking at upgrading to the 6.0 cooler and seen these 2 on ebay. Can anyone tell me if either one looks better than the other since they are such a huge price difference.
both of those will fit, but dealing with used trans coolers isnt ideal to try and save a few bucks. You dont know if they have been flushed, nor can confirm they are clean and have full flow.
We carry new OEM 26 row coolers and the Mishimoto 37 row coolers. Much nicer and a safer bet. The Mishi has lifetime warranty too along with ports specifically made for the 7.3 as the 6.0 uses 1/2" ports and the 7.3 uses 3/8" ports.
Not really sure why Ford made the 6.0 cooler with 1/2" ports when the lines off the trans are 3/8" anyway. :dunno:
decided to go ahead and bite the bullet and got the cheap one just to see. Ended up paying 50$ for it shipped. Seller stated had no cracks or anything, so I will see when i get it and prob flush it a few times. If dosent work, I can always return for refund if I really want.
DO NOT USE A USED ONE. I tried using a used one that looked great but two days later fluid all over my garage floor. I got a dorman one from xdp diesel and they matched the price plus beat it by $5 from one on Rockauto so $176 shipped. got my trans temp 25 degrees cooler on average. never saw above 172 on hilly roads with an 8.2klb 5th wheel.
I have pics on my build thread of when I did mine. you'll need to take off the front bumper and move the ac out of the way to get better angles. took like 2.5hrs including clean up. its a super tight fit lol.
I agree. Transmissions are thousands of dollars to repair. In the long run, your $50 dollar cooler may not be an "improvement" at all if it contains debris that results in malfunctions of your otherwise perfectly functioning current transmission. If you can't afford to do it correctly, just leave it the way it is rather than run the risk of messing up your transmission..
At least install an inline trans filter in the down-flow side of the cooler to trap any debris that may be in it. But these cost $35. There goes your "savings".
keep us updated on the old and new temps. I still want to try and convince you a used one is risky... I flushed mine with simple green for two days and then it leaked and got all over the garage floor... I paid $176 shipped for a dorman one from xdp diesel. over 20k miles and I've pulled 12k goosenecks and 8-10k 5th wheels. I've crawled under a couple of times to check lines/fittings and zero issues. plus the highest ive ever seen was 172 degrees pulling 9k up windy hilly areas in Reno Nevada. It was 109 degrees outside at the time.
I understand it is risky and thats kind of the main reason I am at least getting the inline filter setup as well. I got the cooler last night and so far it looks great and flushed it once and everything came out very clean with no leaks yet. Will flush a few more times. Main reason I want to just at least get a 6.0 cooler in is because just driving around the hills the other day to pick up some stuff, I was reaching almost 200* just driving around although it was a lot of up hill and im currently running M/T tires that dont help either. I am going to follow this how to guide for the install of cooler and also in this guide they have a link to the filter install guide. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct...up.pdf&usg=AFQjCNElFAAyp15ANptnBNx0tgdmRvSbtw
That's the same set of instructions I used. Like I said it took a few days before it leaked and I ran way more fluid through it then probably needed and not super high pressure. I went backwards and forwards flow wise too. wish you all the best too.
I mentioned getting a new one because of the following:
used may be cheaper but now you have to drive to stores, order parts for your little DIY filter with a bypass. You may save some cash up front, but your expenses of fuel, wear n tear on the vehicle, assembling, installing, changing, monitoring, etc...
I used to be a total DIY guy until I noticed my time driving around, searching internet etc... there are some cool calculators that give you an estimate of your worth time per hour and you can compare to the cost of a new preassembled item etc..
I got off on a tangent there sorry lol.
looking forward to new temps and pics of the diy trans fluid filter
Well finally got around to getting this installed this weekend. Everything went pretty well except getting the stupid top threads to stay in place. Started it up 0 leaks and all seems fine just driving the local area. Will try to go out this week and see what temps do. Just had a quick question on what the psi should be. When I first started it up it stayed around 25 psi. But after everything filled up after driving around. It seems to be sitting around 60 psi. Just wanted to see if that is normal pressure.
So just wanted to give an update on temps. I drove my truck the other day to pick some stuff up about 1 hr away and temps were around 180 the entire trip with the stock cooler. I did the exact same trip today and outside temp was about 5* warmer. The temp gauge never moved off of 140* (which is the lowest it goes). So basically with the same drive and even warmer temps, I was getting 140* or less with this stock 6.0 cooler. So I would have to say this is definitely an amazing upgrade to have so far.
