I dont usually have problems... So this morning at 215 when I left for work I remote started the truck. Chugged like a freight train when it started. Ran like that for 10 seconds and I remotely shut it off. Went over to the truck and started it by key instead, did the same thing, gave it a little gas and it returned to normal. It has only done this once before, last winter and it only did it after I started it and walked back inside work.
So I have no idea what exactly it is. Any help would be appreciated. |

Exhaust back pressure valve is closing for faster warm ups. Perfectly normal and safe. There is a way to unhook it if you want but there is really no reason to unless your having problems with it kicking on while driving.

That has been unhooked since before I bought it. It spews out smoke and chugs, I have to give it gas to clear it. This is only the 2nd time it has done it, it is completely random... I dont know if it clears up because I just get in the truck tap the gas pedal and it goes away and I go back inside to the nice warm house.

Ah well I'm clueless then. It sounded like the EBPV at first. Here's a bump for ya!

My high mileage powerstroke van will do that chugging thing for about five to ten seconds whenever I first start it and it is below freezing and it has been sitting for a few days and I don't plug it in. If I plug it in and cold start it, there is no chugging and it fires up normal.
I am assuming you are in cold weather when it is chugging.....if so try plugging it in for a couple hours next time and then starting it. Let me know if this helps. |

The EBPV will not close until the truck has been running for a bit, not on start up. Sure sounds like a GP issue, either that or GPR. There is a sticky at the top of this section, follow it and I bet you will find your answer.

Thats what I thought but it starts right up, no extended start and you can hear it clicking. I am not saying it wouldnt be bad but its totally random. I would figure gpr but it starts so quickly, except this time it started quickly and chugged like a freight train.
I let it sit for over a day or so.... |

How cold out was it where you are? My 01 would chug at 30 deg F if i didn't plug it in. Not too much smoke but it would run real rough until the combustion chambers warmed up. What oil are you running? When it got cold i would switch to rotella 5-40 syn. It helpd immensly with cold starts and the chugging issue. Otherwise like NCH said, glow plugs or the GPR.
