My 01 f250 with the 7.3 is sitting at 323,000 miles. I want to take it to a million. But I don't know enough to add to it or make adjustments to better performance. Or even troubleshoot it. I don't know much of anything about diesels:/ I can turn a wrench alright if I'm pointed in the right direction but I'm not a mechanic by no means. I've seen and heard a lot of people doing small fixed on their trucks to increase performance. But I don't know how. What are some tips y'all more experienced people have for me? Thanks in advance ?
first things first.
get down to basics and learn the fundamentals of trouble shooting and maintenance first.
get a scanner first and foremost. this will help you out ALOT.
these trucks tell you whats wrong if you know how.
do some research before buying a scanner.
A scanner helps but many of the common issues like leaking up pipes, turbo pedestal leaks, stuck or leaking ebpv valve, and even a bad turbo won't throw any codes. I have had mine for over two years and it has never thrown a code other than an overboost code. Boost, egt, fuel pressure gauges and trans temp gauge if auto, go a long way to help diagnose problems.
a set of gauges would be the 1st thing to do, so you can keep
an eye on what the truck is doing real time. a really good
scanner, as mentioned, is also a great idea.
after that, your choices are pretty simple. a performance chip
of some kind, billet comp wheel, intake, and exhaust. this is
assuming your wanting to keep the mods somewhat minimal.
I have auto meter gauges for boost, egt, and fuel pressure. For a scanner I have a scangauge 2 it reads codes and it can show icp, ipr duty cycle, fuel pulse width, oil temp, trans temp, ebp and many other things. It can also be used on any obd 2 vehicle.
Hey . Just got the scanguage 2 and it's pretty cool so far. I haven't fully set it up yet. Gonna do that tomorrow I hope. What are some typical readings on it? Normal I guess. To see where I'm at currently. Anyone else have any gauge brands they like that I can read up on?
I change the oil and all filters regularly and drive it. You don't need to make lots of mods to drive it. Arguably those mods will decrease service life. I say that mainly because folks who add them tend to drive them a little harder, cause they can.
Most issues come from neglecting the fuel system. Change that fuel filter often. I do every time i change the oil every 5k miles. Granted, that's more frequently than the service interval recommends. I do so because I don't put many miles on it; end up changing it about twice, maybe three times a year. I'll occasionally add some fuel conditioner too.
Never had any problems.
