**update** So, i got my OB2 to bluetooth adapter yesterday and downloaded the torque pro app. I scanned for codes with the truck off with the key in the ON position and it says there are no codes. When I try and scan for codes or run the test with the vehicle running, it kills the truck. Is this normal? We've been enjoying the truck. Hauled a ton of hay the other day like it was nothing.
Hey Everyone!
I'm not only new here, but new to diesels as well. So please bare with me, and my foreseeable ignorance.
We just purchased a 2000 f250 diesel last week. It's a powerstroke. Has 219k miles and the transmission and torque converter were replaced on it 9k miles ago.
It's in pretty decent shape, but the previous owners (who only had the vehicle a year and put 19k miles on it) were a little lack luster in maintenance. 4 hours into the 6 hour trip home the water pump went out. Thankfully it puked at a gas station and we were able to have it towed the rest of the way home before any damage occurred.
We have since put on a new belt, water pump, radiator, hoses, thermostat, thermostat housing, fuel filter, and MAP sensor (which was broken...how they didn't notice is besides the point now) It has also had an oil change. (oil in it was basically toxic waste... ewwwww)
We have also done the CCV mod and 6627 intake filter.
It still needs new tires and pads/rotors (the rotors are basically gone at this point...)
This is our first diesel. Primary use of vehicle is to haul my hay burners (horses) and do farm related duties. Currently also a temp daily for SO until we get another gas sipper. (long commute)
My current questions are:
1) I read that the 7.3 was pretty noisy, but i mean, its REALLY noisy. In cabin isn't bad at all, but outside the vehicle it makes all sorts of noises. And what I would describe as a "knocking" noise, but does not sound to be metal smacking. More of like a kinda pop noise? hard to describe . It goes away once driving. I know the tank pick up foot is broken (is "empty" at 1/4 tank). Is this what you guys describe as "cackle" or injector knock? I plan on doing the hutch mod regardless.
2) On cold start ups it smokes mainly white for 15-20 seconds then goes away. It doesn't smoke when driving. It doesn't smoke when warm starting. Is this normal?
3) It seems kinda slow? That's a question because it doesn't really seem to pull very hard until its boosting. At 1200 rpm = slow. At 2300 rpm + = pulling pretty aggressively. Most OE turbod gas cars I have driven were more linear in the power band. Just checking if this is normal?
4) What should I check/replace next? What mods should I do next? I'm very proficient mechanically, but pretty lost as far as diesels go. I need someone to point me in a direction.
If you made it through, thanks for reading. (And for those of you who I know are going to tell me to use the search function ... I did. I read. I learned. I just need reassurance... and my google searching led me here )
