Turbo Noise
First off I don't know if this is a problem or not. Also my description of the sound may not be the best. Anyway, we picked up our new Cougar 29' 5th wheel on Saturday. My F250 pulls great as we were able to cruise between 65-70 but did not want to go faster and introduce sway. when we started up an incline (cruise is on) it get a bit more peddle and the turbo starts winding up and I get this noise that starts and goes like this. whoosh shh shhs shh shh shh while on the incline and then once it starts to lower the boost this goes away. I can hear the whine of the turbo and there is no drop in power just this noise. I thought maybe it was the waste gate but that would not make any sense. Anybody got any ideas what this could be or is it normal? I never have any troubles at all with the truck.
Thanks in advance scooter |

are you running after market air filter and maybe exhaust , mine does the same thing pulling my 30 fot enclosed , if not under hard accel but just pulling good , it wil make that noise you are referring to ,dont worry about it normal if running after market stuff

Yeah I run an AirRaid cold induction air intake system and a Borla exhaust.
Well that makes me feel better. I guess my description was ok

Sure it wasnt turbo surge? Was it happening between 1800-2200 rpms? If it happens again while under load between those rpms its more then likely turbo surge. There is things you can do to correct the surge.

lol funny I was just looking for a video showing turbo surge when your replied. I have never experienced turbo surge so Im only going by what I have read. From what I understand 7.3's once you open the intake up and exhaust and chip them the stock turbo will surge. From what I have read surge occurs when the turbo is out of the map for airflow and will cause rapid flucuation of boost pressure. If you have a guage the needle will oscillate like this video.Video - POS BB turbo surge.

And this will cause your turbo to self destruct if you let it happen too long I guess it puts lots of lateral loads on the turbo.

Definitely sounds like turbo surge to me. Only two fixes. The cheapest is an ATS ported housing. The next option is a new aftermarket turbo.
I went with the Turbonetics and have not been disappointed. |

you could try a whicked wheel alone or combine it with an ported housing
whicked wheels are around 70 - 80 bucks or so and and ats housing is around 425 or so |

From your discription I would say it is working normal, but if your turbo is making a fluttering noise then you have turbo surge. Also like vitalidle says if your boost needle is bouncing up and down that is another indication you have turbo surge.
