Question about transmissions-
I have about 140k miles on my truck, and wonder if there are any maintenance items that need to be done to make sure the transmission lasts. Also, what sort of modifications can be done to beef it up without a total overhaul? Do torque convertors wear out? I am leaning toward a FTVB, and wonder if the transmission needs any other periodic maintenance besides maybe fluid and filter. There is lots of information on engines, tuners, injectors, etc., but not so much on trannies.

BTS VB is $225 tuned for your truck..not much else you can do except maintence, maybe a 6.0 cooler.

The 250 I have now has about 197k.
I got it at 120k and Im pretty sure the tranny is the one that came on it from the factory. I always flush the tranny every January reguardless of milage. (I do put a lot on tho) I alyays use either Mobil 1 or Schaeffers ATF. I was going to add a 6.0 tranny cooler, because I heard they are way bigger, but after watching my tranny gauge I decided it wasnt necessary. ![]() Prolly the best thing to do is get a tranny gauge and make sure you never go over 220.....and never ever cut off the truck if you do get it that hot! |

Any tuned VB will help a great deal, Greg ( FTVB) has been doing them longer than anyone and knows what he is doing even though he doesn't get the fame BTS and JW do. The biggest killer to a auto trans is heat, so keep heat down, the VB will do this by shortening the shifts, and get a good size cooler and monitor trans temps. Sustained temps over 200 degrees means you need more cooling.
