Mercon/Dexron III Stll available!!

Most of you know Mercon/Dexron III was supposedly not being made after June of 2007. This left a lot of 4r100 owners out in left field. ( Please don't reply and tell me Mercon V has been reformulated to now work in the 4r100, I have debated this until I am blue in the face and I will not do it again in this thread, if you want to put Mercon V in your trans have at it!! I really don't care) While trying to help a fellow forum member I called my local Napa and they said they can't get the Mercon/Dexron III fluid but they have Napa's brand called simply ATF. I stopped by and this is Mercon/Dexron III, I knew somebody would get around the legal aspects of this. They can't use the words Mercon/Dexron III in the labe as they belong to Ford and GM, so they simply call it ATF, it says nothing about being dual rated with Mercon V, and it also says to be used in all Ford vehicle requiriing Mercon/Dexron III fluid. So it looks like we still can get the proper fluid for our trans.

I hope this puts this issue to bed, I would still go out and buy a couple cases to have on hand just in case it disappears. I hope this info can help someone.

I saw that stuff when I was looking for mine too Kevin. I wasn't sure about it, it looked a little too generic or something to me but good to know it should work.

Chris,
Just so you know Valvoline makes the fluid. Same as their engine oil.

I walked into both AutoZone and Pep Boys and asked for Dexron III.

BOTH told me "That stuff hasn't be made for Years" and offered me a substitute

Gee, I'm not sure Dexron III is on the shelf. What they offer is a "compatible replacement" FOR Dexron III (says right on the bottle it Replaces it,,, and other older fluids)

Didn't sound like what I was looking for....

But, Again, they both clearly said REAL Dexron III has been discontinued years ago.
