state inspection

hey, i'm from NY and i wanna straight pipe my exhaust...i called the garage and they told me that i need to have the muffler on for the inspection...is this actually a state or emissions requirement? or is the guy just ignorant of the rules? i was under the impression that the muffler has nothing to do with the emissions...just sound

Well i cant say, Yes or No, but offer a suggestion, take the muffle off and cut it in half, then gut it and install it over the straight pipe, then weld it back on. You have the look of a Muffler with a straight pipe flow.

you can contact your local DMV and get the regulations for your state. here we dont have to have them but may be a diffrent story up there.

the muffler has anything to do with emissions. i know in texas they are cracking down on the straight pipes. they're reasoning is that the muffler is a "spark inhibitor" thats bullsh1t, a diesel isnt going to pump out flames. unless of course its an early model 6.4 PSD. haha
