What The!?!?!?(Weird Turbo Sound??????)

My friend has an '00 F-350 maint. truck. The only mods he has is a WW & 4" exhaust. The other day he came over & he wanted me to check something out. He put it in drive, held the brake, & gave it some fuel & of course, you can hear the turbo spool. Then he put it in neutral, held the brake(so it wouldn't roll) & gave it fuel & you could hear this awful noise I'm guessing is from the turbo. It almost sounds like he's revving a table saw! He told me to try it with my truck & I told him to get bent, that sound doesn't sound like it's doing any good for the turbo. Is he doing damage to his turbo? Or does it mean something else???

pull the intake boots off and check for play on the turbo

That was it, SCUFFY! He brought the truck over today(7/26) & I pulled his intake off. The endplay in his shaft was so bad, it had actually accumilated a small pile of shaving from either the compressor housing or from the wheel itself. We pulled the turbo, took it apart, & found these shavings are EVERYWHERE!!! They're on both sides of the turbo, all over the bearings, inside the downpipe, & by the looks of it the largest amount is inside the lower intake. The truck has over 300K on it & the turbo's never been touched beside the WW, which was done sometime in either '05 or '06 I believe. How's this thing still even running????

Ouch! Could you post the VIN number on here so we can make sure we don't ever consider buying that truck!

mine looked horrible, I was only getting 13PSI boost, and maybe 20 with my chip. My comp wheel was SHOT.glad you got it figured out.

I'm glad we got it figured out too, but now I've got an 18' dead truck in my yard!

It had to have, Ryan. I wish my camera was working so you could see all of the shavings in different areas we found!
