Just bought my 7.3 and going to change the oil and wanted to know when you guys change your own oil, how many quarts do you find your truck needs.

I know in general these trucks take 15 but I remember with my 6.0 everytime I changed the oil, 16 quarts was the perfect amount.

thanks

It depends on if you are going to drain the HPOP or not.

Which I am assuming you arent. So Just dump 15 in there and check it afterwards

i use 14 and 1/2 quarts
it was the subject of great debate on antother thread, mine holds 16, despite what the manual says. I've tried and tried to figure out why, i've measured the drained oil, etc, and mine does hold 16 quarts to the full mark (including filter).
Its 15 quarts. No more no less

I would change the hpop also. (high pressure oil pump)
There is a thread some where on here on how to do it.
Do not waste your time changing the HPOP oil there is zero benefit. Bill Hewitt at powerstrokehelp.com is a moron ask any real diesel tech

That's what 97' takes with a Motorcraft FL-1995 or Amsoil EAO99 filter. Even with that amount I'm slightly over full mark on stick.

dave, i know the manual calls for 15 quarts, but i can't explain why mine takes 16 quarts to get full. Is it possible my dipstick is wrong or something? My HPOP res. isn't draining back or anything either. If i put 15 quarts in, i'm at half the hash, and i add another quart after leak checking, and then she's full.

Yes it is there was an updated dipstick for the OBS im betting you dont have it

3 gallon jugs and 2 quarts of rotella. Keeps the oil at a level that doesn't foam up as much. I am no where near stock and I shear the oil down right below 30w at 3000 miles, so I change it every 2500-2800 miles.

All 7.3's take 15 quarts of oil during a oil change. Some truck may register HIGH or LOW depending on your dipstick. Put 15 quarts in, and let it go. Check your oil level EVERYTIME you fill up. 7.3's are known to use oil for MANY reasons. I had a 7.3 that would use 2 quarts every 1000 miles. She had 300k+ on her when I sold her and she is still running at 545k. And as said before, don't change your HPOP oil!

I dont think the hpop change would be bad. with the truck changing owners. I did it to mine the the oil was quite a bit thicker than new oil. (150K)
I don't think it would have a negative effect on the truck.
please inform me if I am wrong.

It will not make a difference. It flows through the engine just like the rest of the oil:thumb:

i'd go crazy leaving it less than the full mark after an oil change, im almost OCD about the oil in my truck, i've got to get a new dipstick. i couldn't walk away knowing the hash was only half covered.......man i get shivers thinking about it right now.......

some times its the "moron" that questions the intelegent, better to keep our mouths shut and be presumed stupid than open them and prove it:thumb:

I find it interesting that the same engine seems to take different amounts to register full. I know my e99 takes all 16 quarts, but my 02 Ex only takes 15.

4 gallon jugs here... no more no less every 4 to 5k miles

If i buy the 5 gallon jugs the 4th oil change is free

I changed the oil in my HPOP and it was black and thick yet the oil in the pan was barely darkened after 2000 miles. Yes, the oil in the HPOP should cycle through the system but was obviously not doing it at the rate I would have expected. When I changed it I added a small amount of the archoil ar9100 additive and afterward my crankcase oil began to darken much more quickly. I think the passage between the crankcase and the HPOP was clogged with sludge and the additive helped to remove a fair amount of it thereby allowing the oil to cycle properly. Just my experience, no claim of expertise whatsoever.
