Seriously??????


And no luck since my last post. Haven't had a chance to drive it yet. When I get home I'm gonna try to start it again and drive it, then check where the fuel gauge is.

Okay. Just put 10 gallons of fuel in, and drove the truck again tonite. Here's what I found. The truck runs good as long as the rpm's stay relatively low.

However, when I accelerate to go up hills or even on flat ground just to get my speed up, and it's moderate to about 3/4 throttle, it starts to get really sluggish, and then it starts to bog. Once I let up the throttle and just drive it real easy, it does fine.

What does this sound like????

Okay. That makes sense actually, especially since the pump keeps making weird noises on start up. The pump keeps pitching up and down, etc.

So, is the fuel pump easy to get to and fix yourself? Where's it located exactly?

And, how much would it be for a fuel pump, AND labor, roughly, if I go back to the shop to have it fixed???

Pumps are about 225 and labor is about an hour.

So since some people don't seem to be about as mechanically inclined as a girl scout I guess you will have to pay about 75 bucks per labor hour. Its mounted on the frame rail under the drivers seat.

Oh and I would pull the bed up and check the sending unit first to make sure it isn't clogged.

SIMPLE: PULL EIGHT BOLTS OUT OF BED. LIFT BED WITH FRIEND. PUT STICK UNDER LIFTED SIDE. PULL SENDING UNIT CAP OFF. (FOR THE LITTLE GIRLS, MAY WANT TO USE A LARGE SPANNER WRENCH.) CHECK FOR CLOGS. ALSO CHECK SCREENS ON SENDING UNIT TUBES FOR CLOGS.


Sounds pretty damn simple to me. AND WORTH THE EFFORT. I have done it by myself twice. It will save you about 250 in labor charges if the unit is actually clogged. Or you can just chance it and only change the pump. But I would imagine if the above task is too hard for you, you really aren't going to have the puller tools to get the lines off of the fuel pump so you might just as well take it and spend your money supporting someone who knows what the hell is going on.

Thanks PowerStroke7.3 - for the detailed instructions

I know nothing about the PowerStrokes, so I'm definitely up for learning so I can save as much as possible on labor, etc.

Now, with that, and since I've made it clear all along that this is my first P-Stroke, maybe next time you could be so kind to give detailed instructions the FIRST time (just like you did in your last reply)

I would personally do that before replacing the pump. Because it costs you nothing to check except time. Dont listen to those others in your thread about pumps. DO NOT BUY AUTOZONE PUMPS. Try and find a FO MO CO Pump and only FO MO CO unless you want to go throught the same thing in 30k miles.

Your best bet is to only use Ford parts. Alot of people on here might disagree but with as much crap as I have done on diesels. I have learned one thing (the hard way). If you arent upgrading to a known brand name, USE OEM.

Okay! you were right! That fixed it. Didn't need to buy a new fuel pump. When this problem started, I was only getting about 5-8 miles of driving or so before it started running real bad. Now, and I mean just tonite, after we cleaned the screen and the sending unit out, it ran almost 20 miles before it starting acting up again (but only by a small bit). It ran horrible before but now only developed a small miss while driving, so we are getting real close. So, there is definitely trash in the tank. Here are a couple of questions I have:

1) Is there a good aftermarket replacement sending unit that would be
less susceptable to clogging up?

2) My technician was telling me to avoid additives. Is there a GOOD
additive that will work okay and not cause any problems or add to
the problems I already have?

3) So, my gas tank must have a LOT of trash in there. How much would a
new tank from FO MO CO be?????

4) Lastly, any other suggestions, or ideas????

do the itp pre pump mod for about 150 with filter, and the ford pump should be 200-250, you can do both yourself, the pump is super easy, plan on a half day for the pre pump kit if its your first one!
