Front clip replacement questions

Hello all,
I'm looking at fixing my recently acquired '02 CCLB 4x4. It was wrecked in the front clip by the previous owner, who would not divulge the circumstances behind the incident, details or otherwise (I'm guessing alcohol was a factor). Basically, it's a 20 footer except for the hood being crunched on the leading edge. Looking closer, the headlight mounting brackets are broken (causing night driving issues), the corner reflectors are bowed out a bit and the flat steel bar under the radiator is bent back a bit.

1st Question: How time-consuming is it to tear the front-clip apart and replace the damaged parts (fenders, hood, headlight mounts and whatever support brackets they're all mounted on).

2nd: What is the function of the steel bar under the radiator? Is it an impact-guard of some type?

I don't have to replace the fenders (at least I don't think so yet). I would like to replace the hood which is easy. It's the headlights flopping that has made it a daytime only truck for me right now. They're functioning, but not functional for avoiding deer which are want to meet your (truck) grill...

I did the front clip on my old '97 f-150 in about 1.5 hours, including the fenders... I've not attempted a S.D. yet.

Pics might be helpful...

It all unbolts pretty easy, but do it in the right order.
Bumper = 4 bolts
Grill = 4 screw + metal clips
Headlights = 4 screws each.
Fenders = 12(?) bolts.

If you're having headlight issues, you'll want to check and see how the Header panel looks. It's the fiberglass thing behind the headlights, that runs across the front. If you have damaged crap, you may want to consider the 05-07 conversion while you're already in there replacing things.

Yes, the header panel is trashed on the ends (both sides)... I was debating replacing all of it with original vs doing the '05. Outside of looks, is there any difference in functionality, better lights, etc? The lenses are new aftermarket that are very clear and appear to be fairly high quality. I'll try to snap some pics for clarification.

Yes, IMO the 05-07 lights are much better as far as light output.

There's a company on eBay that sells sets for front ends. It's not a conversion kit, but one of the closest things to it.

I wrecked my 01 in the front end and when I priced out the 99-04 vs 05-07 the 05-07 was actually a little cheaper IIRC

EDIT: The eBay company is called autosdepo. If you choose the 05-07 route, be sure to get bumper mounting brackets. I was going to contact them and see if they'd put a package together for me of everything I needed to see if it'd save me a few bucks.

Thanks! Where I was hunting, I didn't need 4x4 and that over-sized El Camino gets a bit better mileage than my 350. Although I do seem to be getting around 15.8 with it!
