TAIL GATE LOCKS ITSELF??? wHY

After I drive a bit my tailgate locks itself. Is this normal.

Sounds like there is something wrong with your latch/lock to me. Mine has never locked by itself.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't think it was normal but then again I didn't know for sure. It isn't that big of hassle, & it's never been stolen. A simple turn of the key & she opens right up.

No problem. Other than the inconvenience, it's not a bad thing because it does keep it from being stolen.

Yeah, happens on the old mans truck too, about every third or fourth time he goes to open it.

I have a tailgate off an f150 on mine and I haven't got it re-keyed yet, so when it locks itself I have to take the inside cover of the tailgate to gain access to the handle mechanism.

Yeah, my moms 02 locks everytime you shut it. but my 03 doesnt. Stumps us. So we just let it be haha

Mine was getting harder and harder to open and I sprayed some lithium grease on each side where it latches and it's good as new. Maybe open it up and spray some grease on the inside mechanism.
Worth a try.
