Talking removing rear leafs???

In the March issue of Diesel Power, Jason Sands wrote the "Old Vs. New" article.
In it he talked about taking out a couple of rear leafs on each side for a better ride then adding air bags in case he wanted to tow....

Anybody done this?

When I bought my truck it had 3 rear leafs broke on each side How do you do that!?!?!?! No trailer hitch!
Anyway, it handled the road like it was on rails, even going waaayyy faster than I should have on those gravel back roads! I had both rear packs replaced and now it doesn't handle the corners near as well.... I'd like to do something like this but IDK...

What are your guys thoughts....

Okay, is it possible to remove leaves from the spring packs in the fords, or is the rod in the center welded or something?
