I'd say if you did a few coats of high build primer it would make them smooth.

I tried the sanding and painting tonight for about 6 hours. didnt come out as well as I would have liked....I had chrome handles before and the glue would NOT come off the handle no matter what i tried.

Paint doesn't fill in any holes but allows what is underneath to show through.
