What the? 01 E40D help
Hi everyone,
Well, not sure what's up here. Came home from work yestorday. There's a highway crossing that needs a bit of humpf to get across. Something didn't feel right. Then at other stop signs, it isn't shifting from 1st to 2nd. Doesn't happend all the time. Figured I had some time to check it out. Today went for a long trip. Now is happening allot, 80% of the time, and now the OD light is flashing. Other shifts are now being effected. Feels like a slight clutch vibration from 1st to 2nd. Other gear shift transitions fine, but some times delayed. Very slow take off, still happends, hard take offs, still happends. But as said, both at about 80% of the time. Was just serviced at dealer in Feb. Only change's in the time I've had it back from the shop is did Ford AIS and CCV mods two weeks ago. About a month and half ago, put the banks power pack chip back in (they say 105hp). question: 1- Did I hurt it by taking off to hard to often? 2- As some know, I was in a big front end hit last year. Trans cooler smashed and leaked. Do not see any fluid leaks. Checked fluid, looks clean and full. Could something have happend to the trans at inpact and very hard stop? P.S. Trans gauge has not worked sence hit. I think it's wiring, but? At a loss here. Have ScanGauge II, and no codes shown / saved. Will go to Ford Monday, but a bit hurting for the weekend, and want to know what others think or know about this condition. Thanks all. Last edited by Brickhouse; 11-08-2008 at 12:42 PM. |

Anouther thing, It was hard to read the level stick, even after many tries. Reading looked to be just above normal when hot. As in just above the white guage onto the rod. I just checked it this morning when cold. Read the same, looks slightly above level guage, same spot.
Could this problem be from to much fluid? I did just have an engine oil change a two weeks ago. Maybe they added fluid? |

IF your truck is an 01, you don't have the E40D. You have the 4r100
They stopped making the E4OD when the superduty's came out, and switched to the 4R100. |

Well, here's the info off the trans.
tag 6W 1C3P-EA PRB-DL 00038158 BD-1C09 On trans casting REF81P-7006-CA GearVenders tailshaft states GV E40D 01 F550 Whos got a parts book for trans verification. Anything ells to look for on the trans to ID what IS installed? Pan has info but didn't look informitive. I looked at above link, and the pan is the same. Is there a difference in pans from the E40D and the 4R100? http://www.thedieselgarage.com/projects/e4od/163.jpg Last edited by Brickhouse; 11-09-2008 at 03:37 PM. |

Hello again all, well I went looking for a scanner and got lucky. A trans guy hooked me up.
No current codes. Just old codes, that may be because of the gearvenders over drive. After driving with a snap on MT2500 scanner attached. He states the 1 & 2 shift solinoids were staying on at same time. Tork convertor running good. States replace valve body and solinoids. What do you all think? Plus, O/D flashing, and no code came up. And, down shfting coming to stop light now being felt. Like putting on the brakes, but not yet. Like falling into 1st early. Nice little jolt I can say. Old codes in memory were: p0733 Gear 3 incorrect ratio p0783 3-4 shift error p0782 2-3 shift error p0781 1-2 shift error p0732 gear 2 incorrect ratio But he states more than likly due to gear venders O/D. |

3 most possible causes, most frequent first.
Bad diode. This is not electrical. It's a 2nd gear holding piece. sticking 1-2 shift valve. caused by metal bad solenoid body. never seen it, but still possible. |
