trans fluid type
I have a 96 f-350 w/e4od trans. What type of trans fluid do I use? The owners manual says to read dip stick for type, but the dip stick does not say! Asked @ local parts store and was told several differant types, such as dex/merc, merc V, merc III.........
Any help w/this would greatly be appreciated. |

I don't know about the E4, but the ZF-5 in my '95, while admittedly a manual trans, states right on the side of the trans, "SYNTHETIC ATF ONLY". That would be Merc V; Merc III is dino. Also, from what I've learned, Mercon is Ford's formulation, Dexron is a GM formulation, and ATF+4 is Chrysler. Fortunately, Auto Zone has a generic of Merc V, so rather than spending $10/qt for Mobil 1 Merc V, I can get it for half that.

That is correct. However, Ford has discontinued Dexron III for quite some time now, accompanied by a TSB informing us that Mercon V fluid can be used in place of Dexron III.
