shift cable pops off

wonderin if anybody has had this problem and could help. I have a 2000 f250 automatic. a week or so went to the store and couldn't shift out of park and the shifter had nothing. crawled under it and the cable had popped of the manual shifter lever on the trans. So i jammed it back on and made it home. Ordered a new cable and installed it (didn't use the procedure i just read about) everything lined up and shifted fine. This is my plow truck and everytime i check it, it's barely on and and i need to jam it back on, i can knock it off the shifter lever by just touching it. Is the locking adjustment tab meant to hold it on? The pin with the depression on it does not appear to be worn(does anyone know the name of that pin?) How hard is it to replace said pin?

I just replaced my neutral safety switch (there's another name for it but cant think of it). I have a manilla colored clip that attached the cable to the lever on the tranny. To get the clip off the ball, u have to use a small screw driver and push the tab between the stationary half and the half that slides up. Sliding the half of the clip up allows it to pop of the ball. Then you pop it back on ball and slide the half of the clip back down. The clips slides into groves so you can adjust your cable so the indicator on your shifter lines up with the gear your in. Is the sliding part of your clip broken off?
