Tranny Trouble?
I'm new here so please bare with me...
We have a 1997 F250 7.3L PS turbo diesel with only 30,000 miles. When we bought the truck new, the tranny went out shortly after we got it. The Ford dealer had it rebuilt and it's worked fine until now. Now it comes out of gear while driving, but the overdrive light is NOT flashing. I checked the tranny fluid level and it's OK, and the fluid is a nice pink color. Is it likely I need a tranny rebuild? Many of the 30,000 miles have been "hard" miles hauling an 8000 lb horse trailer. The truck came with the "towing" package on it, which presumably has extra tranny cooling. I don't know what tranny I have in the truck. Is that important? If so how do I determine that? Thanks in advance for the help. Norm Green Sherwood, OR |

The tranny is an E40D and I don't know anything about the factory adding extra tranny coolers for the "towing package" so I wouldn't count on finding an extra cooler. As far as your issue of coming out of gear.... I'm no tranny guy so I can't say, but I think you have an issue that needs to be diagnosed by a transmission expert. Good luck, other will be along to help you.
