zf 5 speed trouble

1997 ford f 250 4x4 5 speed. i was driving down tyhe road and i shifted from third to fourth and the transmission just acted like it was in nuetral. the shifter was stuck in the fourth gear position. i had to pull over and jerk it out of fourth. now third and fourth are just like nuetral. there is no gear at all in neither one. if you put it in the third gear position it just falls down in fourth. help please

maybe the locks on the gear that hold it into place are shot.
