No BS tranny advice/opinions
At this point I don’t know what to do.
My 97 has what has been a perfectly good transmission but I had plans that included a TW chip, exhaust and intake. My dilemma? I may have to haul a 14k pound trailer 2000 miles next spring and in preparation I’m compiling a list of what I need to make it an enjoyable/uneventful trip. My highly trusted tranny shop tells me if I add a chip my converter will crap out - guaranteed. I suggested a shift kit and was told it would help the clutches but the converter would still fail. Now I’m backing up and considering NOT installing the chip and dealing with my current power level in the name of saving my tranny. I really can’t justify a $3500. tranny repair bill to the Mrs when it’s not really in our budget and all seems well at the moment. Are these converters really so weak that any added power shells ‘em out? |

The tranny is gonna crap out either way, guaranteed. when? who knows, but it will. i think they're just saying that if you add power the tranny is not gonna last as long. theres no guarantee that a day or two after the chip is in your t/c fails, but its not gonna last longer than if you didnt put the chip in. If the tranny is on the way out, more power will help it get there quicker
