2001 F250 shifting past 4th?

I have a 2001 F250 4x4 (automatic) and she runs great, but recently it seems that when it shifts 3rd to 4th, it quickly skips over and goes into over drive. 1-3 are very strong and run out great, even if you are barely touching the gas to go, but soon as she hits 4th, it will quickly go right into 5th or overdrive I guess it is.

I've heard different things; could this be a solenoid? If so, is it an internal or external, if it is at all... Any thoughts?

4th is overdrive. There is no 5th gear.

What you are feeling is converter lock up.

Check for codes. If there is an error the OD OFF light will flash.

Fair enough, but why would it die so bad? You can tap the brake and it will downshift and run out fine.
It does not do it when she's cold, but after it warms up it will do this.

The trans shifts differently when it's cold. Taping the break unlocks the TC. As for 5th gear, it's all in your head.
