NO GEARS

I have a 2000 7.3 F350 powerstroke. I pulled a boat to the lake the other day and after we unloaded the boat, I put it in drive and I had no gears. I had reverse but nothing else. I put it in 4wd and still nothing. We had to be pulled out. I let the truck sit for a couple of hours and when we got back it went into gear and I was able to drive home. I changed the fluid and the filter. there wasnt any metal shavings in the pan. I have read that being on a incline can make a difference if your fluid is low. That was not the case. The fluid was fine. I dont know if its a pump or what. We latter drove it over one thousand miles and no problem. It acts up every once and a while. Any help???
