4r100 problems need advice

I bought a 01 7.3 4x4 a few months ago and I"ve been in the process of painting it and getting it ready for the road, but it has tranny issues and I"m trying to figure out if its junk or can be saved. If you take off with the shifter in drive it takes off in 2nd gear everytime, if I pull it down into first it takes off in 1st so I know 1st gear is their and works. Once you get moving and shift it to 2nd it stays in 1st until you shift into drive and then it skips 2nd and goes to drive, again I know 2nd works because it their if you take off in drive. When I drive it I take off with the shifter in 1 and then wind it up and go to drive and it seems to work ok, but I would really like to just take off in drive and leave it. Do I need to look for a new tranny or is this something I can fix. Thanks

B4SouthernMiss22, If you dont mind how much lift is on your truck and what is the wheel, tire size. My truck is red and will have the 05-07 front end conversion when I get it painted and I really like the look of you truck.
