A litTle help with ATF change and valve body install?

Ok I'm really not a great mechanic (will be obvious in a second).

I'm installing a BTS valve body, new filter, and oil change on my '02 f350 PS. Ive got the valve body off, but I have the shim plate that goes between the valve body that is about 11x4inches, but there is a stock shim (for lack of what it is really called) and I would have to remove several other components to remove it too. So do I leave it on and just put the BTS shim under it and install the new valve body?

And then which is the return line for the trams fluid on the trans? The one more forward or to the rear of the truck? I only ask becuase I do not see a drain bold on the converter.
