Question Wouldn't go into Drive?

This just happened to me a couple a mins ago I was driving my truck home from class and giant plastic tub lid that was in the bed of my truck flew out so I turned around to go get it. After I went back threw the lid back in the bed I jumped in the truck and put it in drive and it just revved up like it was in neutral. I tried it in 2nd and 1st and it just did the same thing as overdrive. It would however go into reverse after a few seconds which i used to get off the road. My trans temp was showing around 140-160 so it wasn't hot. I turned the truck off and let it set for a few seconds and then cranked it up back and it drove like normal. What could cause this? Is this a sign that my trans is about to go out? I haven't checked the trans fluid yet because its pouring down rain right now but it hasn't been that long since I checked it and it looked good last time. The last time I change the trans fluid was last summer and I did find what appeared to me to be clutch material. What do you guys think?

it could be a couple different things.
1) bent/broken fork
2) broken/damaged pressure plate (to include missing/broken springs)
3) clutch cylinder

Mine doesn't shift the smoothest, and doesn't want to go in reverse or back into first after i stop, just press the ol' clutch in 3-4 times and she slides right in.

Yea I got it in the transmission shop now and it is just about all. I tore it up the most just trying to get it transmission shop. On the way there something exploded going up a big hill and then my trans temp went way up and started smoking and my wife call, who was behind me, and said that oil was now coming out from everywhere and hitting her jeep (she was not happy about that). I pulled over and let it cool down for a little bit and then decided to keep driving it because I was almost to the transmission shop. It wouldn't go any faster than 40 after that but I made it there.
